Sons of Zappa and Lennon headline Canalside concerts

Free shows set by Public Enemy, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Lowest of the Low.

In its most musically diverse line-up to date, the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. has finalized its 2016 Canalside summer concert series.

The shows features sons of two music legends — Frank Zappa and John Lennon — along with what is becoming annual appearance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. On July 28, the BPO will perform a tribute to the late David Bowie.

In all, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. has booked 12 free Thursday night shows along with six ticketed concerts and, this year, will be introducing a new Friday night series that recognizes Buffalo’s diverse neighborhoods.

“This year we worked hard to put together a diverse line-up that has something to satisfy nearly every musical taste,” said Robert Gioia, chairman, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp.

The headliners for the free Thursday shows are:

  • June 9 - soul singer Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires
  • June 16 - Frank Turner, July Talk
  • June 23 - Public Enemy
  • June 30 - Country singer Frankie Ballard
  • July 7 - Dweezil Zappa “Plays Frank Zappa”
  • July 14- Shakey Graves and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Wild Child
  • July 21 --The Arcs and Mariachi Flor De Toloache
  • July 28 --Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra “A Tribute to David Bowie”
  • Aug. 4 - Tritonal
  • Aug. 11 - Lowest of the Low and Serena Ryder
  • Aug. 18 - Coolio
  • Aug. 25 - Claypool Lennon Delirium featuring Les Claypool and Sean Lennon

The six ticketed shows are:

  • June 17 - Stage One Live presents: Faith Evans, 112, Carl Thomas and Total
  • June 19 - ”Kiss (98.5) the Summer Hello: Meghan Trainor, Igga Azalea, Magic!, Troye Sivan, Melanie Martinez and Jonas Blue.
  • June 21 - Twenty One Pilots
  • June 23 - Buffalo’s Kerfuffle 2016: Violent Femmes, AWOLNATION, Bloc Party, ColemanHell, Death from Above 1979, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, the Moth & the Flame, PVRIS and the Strumbelllas.
  • July 20 and July 30 - Buffalo RibFest--SWV (July 29 headliner); Ashley Campbell, Joel Crouse and Eric Van Houten (July 30 headliners)
  • July 31 - The Edge (103.3): Deftones, City and Colour, Sam Roberts Band, Joywave, Tokyo Police Club, The Joy Formidable, Best Coast and Holy White Hounds.
