Atlanta-based Haven Communities and Wheelock Street Capital, out of Greenwich, Connecticut, in December acquired the 1.9-acre site at the intersection's southeast corner, at 1415 S. Church St. The site today contains two small office buildings, which will be demolished to make way for the new development, said Drew Barnette, Charlotte director of Patterson Real Estate Advisory Group, which served as capital advisor on the deal.

The project will include 304 units and be called Haven South End. The plan is to break ground this summer and deliver the first units by mid-2023, Barnette said.

"We've been looking for the right opportunity in Charlotte's South End neighborhood and are thrilled to be partnering with Haven Communities on this development," said Hunter Jones, principal of Wheelock Street Capital, in a statement.

The firms paid $15.5 million for the site, according to Mecklenburg County real estate records. The property is across Church Street from Seoul Food Meat Co. and Let's Meat. Final construction costs are still being settled, Barnette said.

In Charlotte, Haven's portfolio otherwise includes a student-housing project, Haven 49.
